Development of tests for scrapie and BSE at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA)

This note provides a brief summary of the work on tests for scrapie and BSE currently underway at the VLA (Veterinary Laboratories Agency).
The VLA work in this area is aimed at developing test procedures for:
- detecting scrapie and BSE in live animals at an early stage in the development of the diseases as possible (all existing tests can only be used post-mortem)
- distinguishing between BSE and scrapie in sheep
