Board Member
Professor Sue Atkinson CBE is a senior executive and Public Health Doctor with wide experience of policy development, implementation and general management. She has used evidence to develop strategy and influence policy and has achieved change particularly through multi-organisational partnership working at local, regional and national levels.
Sue works as an independent consultant and as Chair/Director of Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST) a social enterprise Public Health consultancy and holds a visiting Professorship in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College, London. Sue is currently a Non-executive Board member of University College Hospitals London NHS Foundation Trust. She is Chair of the Greater London Alcohol and Drug Alliance, a member of the London Sports Board, Member of the Court of the London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicine, a member of the NICE Public Health Interventions Advisory Committee and on the External Advisory Group for the Glasgow Centre for Population Health.
Between 1999 and 2006, she was the first Director of Public Health for London and developed the role as Health Advisor to the Mayor and GLA (Greater London Authority) . She was responsible for public health across London - improving and protecting the health of Londoners. She worked with the Mayor and GLA on their strategies to ensure that health was part of the deliverables. Most recently she was instrumental in increasing the Mayor’s powers to include inequalities in health.
She was nationally responsible for the health aspects of Olympic and paralympic 2012 successful London bid and for sustainable communities and health and housing, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer.
Sue has extensive experience within the NHS and as a Senior Civil Servant in DH, including postgraduate experience in both paediatrics and General Practice prior to specializing in Public Health, and also as a Chief Executive in South London. She qualified in Medicine from Cambridge University in 1974.
She was awarded a CBE for her innovative contributions to health and health services, in 2002.
