Product recall of Plumrose Ltd canned chilli con carne

Heads of environmental health services and directors of trading standards will wish to be aware of a product recall by Plumrose Ltd of two brands of canned chilli con carne due to contamination of one of the ingredients with the illegal dye Sudan I. The product was manufactured by Glenbrook Foods Ltd, Portadown, Craigavon Northern Ireland.
Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.
The products recalled are:
UM Glenbrook Chilli Con Carne 368g
The Batches known to be affected are;

Best Before End Sep 06 3254 CT
This product has been on sale in Tesco supermarkets. The company has been made aware of this issue and removed the affected product from sale.
Plumrose Chilli Con Carne 1.7kg
The batch known to be affected is:
Best Before End Jun 06 3153 PCT
This product has been on sale in J. Sainsbury supermarkets. the company has been made aware of this issue and removed the affected product from sale.
No other Plumrose or UM products are known to be affected

Plumrose can confirm that UM Glenbrook Canned Chilli Con Carne and Plumrose Canned Chilli Con Carne products have been temporarily removed from sale.
Products have been recalled from supermarkets as a precautionary measure due to a quality defect in one of the minor ingredients.
UM Glenbrook Chilli Con Carne cans 368g
Coded BBE JUL 06 3212 CT or BBE SEP 06 3254 CT
— in Tesco stores only — should be returned to stores.
Consumers will receive a full refund.
Plumrose Chilli Con Carne cans 1.7kg
Coded BBE JUN 06 3153 PCT
— in Sainsbury's stores only — should be returned to stores.
Consumers will receive a full refund.
Plumrose is taking the issue extremely seriously and complying fully with Food Standards Agency recommendations. The factory has launched a thorough investigation into the cause and has implemented measures to prevent any re-occurrence.
No other products are affected.
