Product recall of Star S.P.A. sauces manufactured in Italy

Heads of Environmental Health Services and Directors of Trading Standards will wish to be aware of a product recall by J.Sainsbury P.L.C. and Safeway Stores P.L.C. of various sauces manufactured on their behalf by STAR S.P.A. of Italy due to the contamination of one of the ingredients with the illegal dye Sudan I.
Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.
The Sainsbury products recalled are:
- Sainsbury's Italian Tomato and Mascarpone Stir In Sauce 150g
- Sainsbury's Italian Sun Dried Tomato and Balsamic Vinegar Stir-In Sauce 150g
- Sainsbury's Be Good To Yourself Mediterranean Vegetable Stir-In Sauce 150g
- Sainsbury's Italian Hot Mixed Peppers Pasta Sauce 500g
Only products with a Best Before End date of up to and including August 2005 are affected.
No other Sainsbury's products are known to be affected.
The Safeway products recalled are:
- Safeway Red Pesto 190g
- Safeway Sun Dried Tomato and Balsamic Vinegar Stir In Sauce For Pasta 150g
- Safeway Chargrilled Red Pepper and Vegetable Stir In Sauce For Pasta 150g
Only products with a Best Before End date of up to and including February 2005 are affected.
No other Safeway products are known to be affected.
J. Sainsbury P.L.C. and Safeway Stores P.L.C. have issued a joint product recall notice in national newspapers which will appear today (17 September 2003) and tomorrow (18 September 2003).
Both Sainsbury and Safeway have placed point-of-sale notices in their stores.
