Fishery products produced in unapproved premises ('The Smoke House') (Update 1)
Wednesday 24 February 2010
Food Alert: for Action
Ref: 03/2010/Northern Ireland (Update 1)
For Information (Outside Northern Ireland)
The public will wish to be aware of further information relating to Food Alert for Action 03/2010/NI issued on 23 February 2010 concerning fishery products produced on unapproved premises.
Following investigations by district councils in relation to this matter, further fishery products from 'The Smoke House' premises bearing different labelling to that previously advised have now been found.
Identification of the Product:
Further products of 'Cold Smoked Mackeral' and 'Hot Smoked Mackeral' (note the misspelling) have been identified on retail sale. In addition, a further product labelled 'Smoked Bream' has now also been identified on retail sale.
District Councils have reported variations in labelling of these products, including different coloured emblems/flags, and the presence/absence of the EU Approval Number (UK 9502 EC). The name 'The Smoke House' has been confirmed as being present on all labelling associated with these products irrespective of the other labelling variations identified.
To assist officers in correctly identifying these products, photographs can be viewed via the link below.
Actions to be taken by District Councils:
As all of these fishery products were manufactured in unapproved premises they do not comply with the requirements of Regulation EC 853/2004 and the Food Hygiene Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006.
District councils are requested to visit specialist Eastern European retail premises in their area to ensure that all fishery products labelled 'The Smoke House' are withdrawn from sale and destroyed, if necessary using powers under the Food Safety (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 and Regulation 25 of the Food Hygiene Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006.
In the event of a district council finding these products or other products labelled 'The Smoke House', they are requested to provide the following details (if possible) of the consignment:
- type/name of the product, and quantity
- copies of available invoices demonstrating traceability of these products
- information on markings or emblems displayed on the product (photographs if possible)
Please send any relevant information to incidents.ni@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk as a matter of urgency.
