Imported food audits
The Agency has carried out a programme of focused audits of local authorities and port health authorities, which looked specifically at their arrangements for controls on imported food of non-animal origin.
A list of the authorities audited as part of the programme, which ran from August 2003 to March 2004, can be found below. The programme included all of the major UK ports where food of non-animal origin is imported. The list also contains the audits of a number of smaller ports where food of non-animal origin is imported.
The imported food focused audit programme forms part of the Agency's commitment to improving the co-ordination and delivery of this area of work as part of the 'Step Change' programme. Imports of products of animal origin, and the Border Inspection Posts through which they are imported, are subject to veterinary checks and separate auditing arrangements carried out by Defra.
The programme was taken forward jointly by the Audit branch within the Local Authority Enforcement Division and the Agency's Imported Food Division. Findings from the audits will also contribute towards developing statutory guidance and performance indicators for local authority imported food functions, and will assist in the dissemination of good practice.
The imported food/ports audit protocols and checklists can be found below. These are reviewed regularly and any comments and suggestions to improve these documents should be sent to Abimbola Adeyemi at abimbola.adeyemi@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk.
Links to the audit reports for each of the smaller ports will be created as they are published.
