The borough is highly developed and has an overall population of 247,000 that is culturally and racially diverse. Poverty, particularly in the south of the borough, is still a significant issue and unemployment at 6.3% (December 2001) is the highest in outer London. It is well located for business with good road and rail links to Central London and contains 2 of London’s largest industrial estates.
Food hygiene and food standards enforcement was carried out by officers of the Food Safety Service Group within the Environmental Health Unit.
The Food Safety Service Group were also responsible for enforcement and provision of advice and information on occupational health and safety in food businesses, licensing of skin piercers and special treatments and management of the infectious disease notification system.
Executive Summary
The Authority was able to demonstrate effective arrangements for its sampling activities, with strong and well established liaison with neighbouring authorities.
The Authority’s food sampling policy and programme allowed for full participation in regional and national sampling surveys together with sampling from the borough’s higher risk premises.
The Authority was generally adhering to its sampling policy and programme, and appropriate follow up action was being taken in response to unsatisfactory sample results in accordance with the Authority's Enforcement Policy. Detailed advisory leaflets and information was distributed to food businesses where appropriate.
