North Down Borough Council has geographically one of the smallest council areas in Northern Ireland, but is regarded economically as one of the wealthiest. The population has increased steadily over recent years and is now in excess of 75,000. Although a significant percentage of the local population is employed outside the Borough, the main towns of Bangor and Holywood provide employment opportunities in the manufacturing, commercial and retail sectors.
