Feed Law Code of Practice

The Code of Practice sets out instructions and criteria to which local authorities - the feed authorities - should have regard when engaged in the enforcement of animal feed law. Feed authorities must follow and implement the provisions of the Code that apply to them.

New Feed Law Codes of Practice for England and Wales

The changes to the Codes include a greater use of competence-based criteria for the authorisation of officials, an increased use of earned recognition for compliant feed businesses and the introduction of country specific codes. Changes will also be introduced in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Legal requirements

The Code of Practice has been issued under the Official Feed and Food Control Regulations 2006. These permit ministers to issue codes of practice in their capacity as competent authorities, under EC Regulation 882/2004 on official controls performed to ensure verification of compliance with feed and food law, animal health and animal welfare rules. The Code of Practice, which has been developed with the help of stakeholders, takes account of EC animal feed law and EC Regulation 882/2004 and national implementing legislation, all of which were applicable from 1 January 2006.
