Grants for local initiatives
The Agency has run schemes to provide grants to support and encourage local authorities to develop and implement local food hygiene initiatives have been running since 2003 in England and since 2004 in Scotland.
In 2005 the initiative was extended to include projects aimed at also improving nutritional standards and in 2007 it was made available to local authorities throughout the UK.
As indicated in the Agency's Strategic Plan 2005–2010, the Agency remains committed to reducing foodborne illness as well as encouraging consumers to choose a healthy diet, particularly where this relates to schools and vulnerable or disadvantaged groups.
The grants scheme 2008-09 was launched on 11 January 2008 and a total of 26 grants awarded to local authorities across the UK.

2007 grants support local food hygiene and nutrition schemes UK-wide
Twenty-three local authorities across the UK have been awarded grants of between £3,180 and £10,000 by the Food Standards Agency to promote food hygiene and healthy eating messages. The scheme addresses targets in the Agency's Strategic Plan 2005 - 2010 to support local food hygiene and healthy eating initiatives, particularly where they relate to schools and vulnerable people.
Local authority grants scheme 2008-09 launched
Applications are now invited for grants of up to £10,000 to support projects to start from mid-May 2008 ending by 31 March 2009. The closing date for completed applications is Friday 29 February 2008.
Recipients of Food Hygiene and Healthy Eating Initiatives Grants 2008-09
Twenty six local authorities across the UK have been awarded grants of between £2,400 and £10,000 by the Food Standards Agency to promote food hygiene and healthy eating messages.
