Targeting enforcement activity
Tuesday 20 July 2004
Targeting means making sure that enforcement activity is directed primarily towards those who are responsible for risk to public or animal health, where the risks are least well controlled or against deliberate or organised crime. Action will be focused on people or companies contravening the law or those directly responsible for the risk and who are best placed to control it.
Most Local/Port Health Authorities have systems for prioritising imported food and feed enforcement activity. These include previous history of response to complaints, risk assessments and action on intelligence gathered on illegal activity. Intelligence relating to illegal imports of animal products gathered by HM Customs may be passed to Local Authorities by the Food Standards Agency to assist with targeted work.
- Redress: If you consider that you/your imported foods/feeds are being unfairly targetted by enforcement authorities then you may complain to the Local Authority and if the authority does not resolve your concerns you may complain to the Local Authority Ombudsman.
