Review of the model
The FSA Board agreed, in October 2005, that the nutrient profiling (NP) model be recommended to media regulator Ofcom for use in development of further controls on the broadcast advertising of foods to children. The Board also committed to reviewing the impact of using the model on the nature and balance of TV advertising to children one year from the date of use.
Background
The NP model was developed by the FSA to provide Ofcom with a tool to enable the differentiation of foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS), from those which are not, with the aim of contributing to improving the balance of food advertising to children. This model is now being used as part of further controls implemented by Ofcom on the broadcast advertising of foods to children. Ofcom’s statement on 22 February 2007 outlined the timetable for the new content and scheduling restrictions for HFSS foods to come into effect.

Nutrient profiling open Board meeting discussion
At its October 2005 open meeting, the FSA Board discussed a paper that described the Agency's development of a nutrient profiling model to support Ofcom’s work on the further regulation of broadcast advertising of foods to children. This paper also described the stakeholder consultation and expert scrutiny that the model was subjected to.
Summary of Nutrient Profiling Review Panel's responses to stakeholder comments, October 2007
On 15 October 2007, the independent Nutrient Profiling Review Panel (NPRP) met with stakeholders to hear their views on the Agency's nutrient profiling (NP) model. Stakeholders were also asked to provide written evidence in support of questions for the Review Panel's consideration.
Nutrient Profiling: Update of 2004 literature review
As part of the current review of the Agency's Nutrient Profiling (NP) model, the NP Review Panel requested an update to the previous literature review to ensure familiarity with all relevant scientific developments in the area. The updated literature review provides information on national and international developments in NP models and their intended purpose.

Academic workshop on nutrient profiling: 28 February 2008
It was agreed and announced at the outset of the Nutrient Profiling (NP) model review that an independent academic workshop would form part of the review process. Following on from the NP Review Panel's initial consideration of issues raised by stakeholders this workshop took place on 28 February 2008.
