The Food Standards Agency has developed its Cooking Bus in partnership with the Focus on Food Campaign to pursue the common objective of raising food standards, particularly to promote healthy eating and improve food hygiene.
|
Focus on Food was founded to promote and strengthen the status of practical food education in primary and secondary schools. This is the second Cooking Bus to hit the road. The first Focus on Food Cooking Bus was launched in 1998.
The state-of-the-art mobile kitchens deliver food education support and intervention in the form of inspirational on-board cooking workshops for primary and secondary schools.
The FSA Cooking Bus is actually a pantechnicon and weighs 19 tonnes, opening out into four fully-fitted kitchens. In the cooking sessions 16 children at a time prepare and cook from scratch fun-to-make recipes, such as upside-down roasted vegetable tarts, shortbread biscuits, fruit kebabs and smoothies.
Totally self sufficient, with its own power and water supplies, the bus will park in a school's playground for a week's worth of lessons at a time. Visits can also be arranged from other schools in the surrounding area so as many young people and teachers as possible can benefit.
The bus, decked out in bright, attractive, FSA livery, comes complete with all the food and equipment required and includes ovens, fridges, microwaves, sinks, demonstration areas and workstations.
