A cockerel’s comb (referred to by the company, Bioiberica S.A., as a rooster’s comb) is the large fleshy red skin on top of the cockerel’s head.
Bioiberica’s extract was authorised in 2013 as a novel ingredient to be added to various dairy products. The applicant is now seeking approval to extend the use of the extract to include food supplements.
The company states that cockerel combs have been widely consumed in Europe as part of traditional dishes. The company also states that the extract is rich in sodium hyaluronate and helps to lubricate and cushion joints.
