Draft research strategy on TSEs issued
Wednesday 8 September 2004
The incidence of BSE in the UK continues to be in decline and vCJD cases appear to be stabilising. However, some uncertainties remain on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) and their relationship to animal and human health.
To take work in this area forward, UK Government funders of research into TSEs, including the Food Standards Agency, have prepared a joint strategy document on human and animal health aspects of TSEs.
The draft strategy highlights the major scientific uncertainties relating to TSEs and how these will be addressed by the research and development strategies of the major UK funders.
The public bodies involved are:
- Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
- Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
- Department of Health
- Food Standards Agency
- Medical Research Council
Comments are invited on the draft statement: 'UK strategy for research and development on human and animal health aspects of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) 2004-2007', which can be found on the MRC - TSE Joint funders' website
Responses should be sent to tsestrategy@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk
