Brands of Camembert cheese withdrawn
Monday 19 December 2005
Camembert cheeses sold by a number of retailers, including Waitrose, are being withdrawn because of concerns about possible contamination with E. coli O26.
Some strains of E. coli O26 may cause severe food poisoning. The Food Standards Agency has issued a Food Alert for Action.
People should not eat this cheese. For information on how to obtain a refund, contact the importer, Anthony Rowcliffe & Son Ltd, on its customer care line, 01892 839950.
The affected cheeses are:
- Reauxs Gaslonde Camembert (250g packs)
- Camembert de Normandie Th. Reaux (250g packs)
- Reauxs Gaslonde Camembert 1 kg (normally sold over the cheese counter)
All batches of the above cheeses are affected, including all use-by dates.
The cheeses are made in France by Laiterie Fromagerie du Val dAy-Etablissement REAUX and are distributed in the UK by Anthony Rowcliffe & Son Ltd.
Anthony Rowcliffe & Son Ltd has contacted all the retailers that it supplies with these cheeses. It is also arranging for point-of-sale notices to be put up in shops and is taking out advertisements in national newspapers.
Food alerts
Food alerts are the FSA's way of letting local authorities and consumers know about problems associated with food and, in some cases, providing details of specific action to be taken.
They are issued under two categories:
- Food Alerts: for Action
- Food Alerts: for Information
