Nutrient specifications for school caterers published
Friday 19 May 2006
The Food Standards Agency has today published target nutrient specifications (TNS) for a range of manufactured foods used in school meals throughout the UK. The TNS have been developed to assist caterers in meeting the wider standards for school lunches.
The specifications, which are voluntary, set maximum levels for total fat, saturated fat, sodium/salt and sugar in a range of manufactured foods, including bread, poultry products, soups, sausages and burgers. Minimum levels have also been set for protein in certain vegetarian products.
The TNS have been developed to support new minimum standards for school food, launched today by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). These standards, which apply to food served at lunchtimes and food other than lunch (e.g. vending machines/tuck shops), are available at the DfES link below.
In conjunction with this work, the School Food Trust will publish detailed guidance to help schools implement the new food standards. This is available at the School Food Trust link below.
Amendment to target nutrient specification for chips/roast potatoes
This was amended in the table below on October 2 2006 due to technical factors in the manufacture of these products in the UK.
