Guar gum investigation
Friday 3 August 2007
The Agency has been informed by the European Commission about possible dioxin and pentachlorophenol contamination of an edible thickening agent called guar gum (E412), used in a variety of pre-prepared foods.
As a precautionary measure, the European Commission has requested that Member States identify, hold and test all batches of guar gum imported from an Indian supplier.
The Agency is investigating this issue as a matter of urgency and met yesterday with industry representatives to discuss whether any affected material has been supplied and used in the UK.
Based on the information so far available, there is no immediate health risk to consumers, but as these chemicals have the potential for a range of toxic effects, people shouldn't be exposed to them unnecessarily. The FSA will provide more information as it becomes available.
