EU Commission report on GM Regulation published
Wednesday 21 March 2007
The EU Commission has published a Report to the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament into the implementation of Regulation (EC) 1829/2003 on genetically modified (GM) food and feed.
The Report finds that the Regulation has only been in operation for a limited period of time. Therefore, experience of implementing the Regulation is extremely limited. The Commission therefore concludes that additional time is needed to gain practical experience of the Regulation, before proposals to amend it can be made.
The Report takes into account a consultation with Member States in 2005, and discussions in the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) and in the Council of Ministers. It describes the experience acquired with the practical implementation of the Regulation, sets out additional implementing measures and points, clarified by the Commission, that had been raised by Member States.
