Invitation to novel foods workshop
Friday 29 February 2008
The Food Standards Agency's Advisory Committee on Novel Food and Novel Food Processes is holding an open workshop on novel foods in London on Wednesday 2 April, 2008. Anyone can attend, including members of the public.
The ACNFP is the independent group of experts that advise the Agency on any matters relating to novel foods (including genetically modified foods) and novel processes.
The meeting will give people an opportunity to discuss the work of the committee, allergenicity, gastrointestinal intolerance and the labelling of novel foods. There will also be a brief update on the revision of the current European Commission regulation on novel foods and an open discussion arising from audience questions.
The closing date for applying to attend the workshop is 24 March, 2008. Details of the workshop and how to apply to attend or submit questions can be found at the link towards the end of this page.
What are novel foods?
Novel foods are defined as a food or food ingredient that does not have a significant history of consumption within the EU before 15 May 1997.
Before any new food product can be introduced on the European market, it must be rigorously assessed for safety under the Novel Food Regulation (EC) 258/97. In the UK, the assessment of novel foods is normally carried out by the ACNFP.
