Agency publishes report on Meat Hygiene Service
Wednesday 8 October 2008
The Agency has today published a report on how the Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) could be most effective in its work with abattoirs across Great Britain. The report was drafted by a working group comprising representatives from the Food Standards Agency, the MHS and the meat industry.
The MHS is responsible for the protection of public health and the health and welfare of animals through enforcing of legislation in approved fresh meat premises.
The 'optimisation' report contains a number of recommendations on how to improve the working practices of the MHS and also food business operators. These recommendations include legal requirements relating to animal identification, the working patterns of individual slaughterhouses and IT issues.
FSA veterinary advisor Kenneth Clarke said: ‘This report has provided a very useful insight into working practices within the industry. We have seen many examples where joint working can result in significant efficiencies and this has to be good news for everyone.’
