The Agency has today issued a food alert about Ears and Tongue Roll from Lithuania, labelled with the Samsono brand. This is a ready to eat pork product mainly sold in specialist food shops in England. Samples have been found to contain levels of listeria that could be dangerous.
The levels of listeria that were detected are some of the highest seen by the Agency in a ready to eat food.
The affected batches are:
- Product name: Ears and Tongue Roll
- Product brand: labelled 'Samsono'
- Producer code: LT84-07EB
- Best before: all best before dates
The product is sold in specialist shops in:
- Greater London area, Birmingham, Derby, Leeds
The product has been recalled from sale by the importer Lignesa Foods Ltd. The Agency advises people who have bought the product labelled 'Samsono Ears and Tongue Roll' not to eat any of it.
The Agency is advising local authorities to check that the above product is no longer being sold in their areas. The packaging states that the product is exported by JSC 'Samsonas' and the Lithuanian authorities have been informed so that appropriate action can be taken.
Listeria is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease. Pregnant women, people over 60 and those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to listeria. If you have eaten this product and become unwell you should consult a doctor or contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
A Lithuanian translation of the above advice can be found at the link below.
Food alerts
If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). Food alerts are the FSA's way of letting local authorities and consumers know about problems associated with food and, in some cases, providing details of specific action to be taken. They are issued under two categories:
- Food Alerts: for Action
- Food Alerts: for Information
You can get FSA alerts either by email or SMS text. Visit the Get Alerts page at the link below to find out how.
You can also subscribe to our Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed for food and allergy alerts.
