FSA Scores on the Doors pilot schemes
In the UK, a number of local authorities are currently operating Scores on the Doors schemes that form part of the Agency's pilot scheme.
The schemes are generally based on food hygiene and safety procedures, the structure of the establishment (including cleanliness, layout, condition of structure, ventilation etc.) and confidence in management aspects of the Food Law Code of Practice. A rating system, in Annex 5 of the Code of Practice, is used to rate a food establishment and determine when the establishment will be inspected next.
The same rating system is generally used to produce the score that appear on the certificate which tells consumers how good the food standard of the establishment is.
The aim is for inspection information to be displayed on the door or window in each food outlet, supported by website information.
Keeping score
The evaluation of the Scores on the Doors schemes is being carried out by two organisations. The aim of the evaluation is to develop an evidence base to make a recommendation about a national approach to Scores on the Doors.
Greenstreet Berman is working with local authorities to gauge the impact on both their resources and industry compliance.
Separately, Continental Research is investigating consumer preferences and understanding of the schemes, through a series of focus groups, street surveys, and exit interviews.
Greenstreet Berman will draw all these strands of the research together and deliver a report to the Agency in early 2008.
IAG role
The Agency has appointed members to its Independent Advisory Group (IAG), tasked with scrutinising this evaluation process. IAG consists of representatives from enforcement, consumer, and industry groups. The first meeting will take place in September 2007.

Midlands pilot schemes
Six local authorities are taking part in the Midlands Scores on the Doors pilot, although one authority, Kingston-upon-Hull City Council, is outside the geographical area of the Midlands. The six authorities are running different schemes.
Food Hygiene Information Scheme in Scotland
Scottish consumers can see how well food businesses in their area have fared in their last food hygiene inspection, as part of a two-year food hygiene information pilot scheme launched on 6 November 2006. It effectively 'opens the door' to the kitchen and/or food areas. This will increase consumer confidence and help people make informed choices about where they eat or buy their food.
5-star scheme pilots
Most London Boroughs, eight other local authorities in England and two authorities each in Wales and Northern Ireland will be operating Scores on the Doors schemes sponsored by the Agency. Some of these pilots have already started, others will be starting soon. All of these authorities are running the same '5-star' scheme.
