The Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes is holding an open Workshop on Novel Foods in London on 2 April 2008. The Closing date for applying to attend the workshop is 24 March 2008.
Invitation to all interested parties
ACNFP Workshop on Novel Foods
You are invited to attend an open Workshop on Novel Foods to be held at Aviation House, 125 Kingsway, London on the afternoon of Wednesday 2 April 2008 from 1:30pm.
The workshop is being organised by the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes which is a non-statutory, independent body of scientific experts that advises the FSA on any matters relating to novel foods (including genetically modified foods) and novel processes.
The aim of the meeting is to give the public an opportunity to discuss with the Committee those subjects that fall directly within the Committee’s remit. The meeting will be chaired by Professor Mike Gasson, the ACNFP Chairman. Attendance will be limited and by ticket only, with a maximum of two people per organisation.
The meeting will be structured as follows:
1. Introduction.
The role of the ACNFP and how it links to other advisory committees on food safety and to the European Union. The openness policy and what data can be regarded as confidential will also be explained.
2. Discussions on allergenicity, gastrointestinal intolerance and labelling in relation to novel foods including small group discussions.
These three issues are often a key part of the assessment of novel foods that are proposed for introduction to the EU market. The discussions will be preceded by presentations by ACNFP members, drawing on examples of novel products that have recently come before the Committee.
3. A brief update on the revision of the current EC regulation on novel foods.
4 An open discussion with tabled audience questions.
The audience will be asked to comment on any issues related to the assessment of novel or GM foods. This could include the scientific rationale used in the safety assessment, whether the procedures are sufficiently open for the UK public to make their views known, and whether any fundamental changes should be made in the forthcoming review of the novel foods regulation. Priority will be given to questions submitted in advance of the meeting.
We will invite participants to submit written questions on topics that are within the Committee’s remit to be considered in the final session. Minutes will be produced for this meeting and any relevant questions that cannot be taken will be
addressed as an annex to these minutes.
