G01020: Pilot study to assess molecular methods that might be applied to the safety evaluation of novel foods
Wednesday 16 October 2002
This research project aims to evaluate the potential of proteomic and metabolomic profiling for incorporation into safety assessment procedures for novel foods.
Background
This pilot study is using the tomato as a model system to evaluate the potential of proteomic and metabolomic profiling and their potential for the incorporation into safety assessment procedures. It will be important to evaluate changes in GM foods against the natural level of variation due to genetic background as well as developmentally and environmentally induced changes to gene expression.
Research Approach
The work will focus on method development and the investigation of the base level of variation in gene expression due to differences in cultivar and environmental conditions. A limited comparison of conventional and GM cultivars will take place at the end of the study.
