Food route: a journey through food

'Food route: a journey through food' is a range of colourful age-appropriate resources designed and developed to enable young people to gain food-related skills and knowledge.

Informed by young people themselves, and their teachers, the resources bring the Agency's food competences to life.

Food route has been developed to:

  • enable children and young people at primary and secondary schools to develop skills and knowledge around diet and health, food safety, cooking (food preparation and handling) and consumer awareness (when shopping)
  • support independent self study so pupils can learn and test their knowledge at their own speed
  • support curriculums across the UK with relevant links to food technology, home economics, science, personal health education and religious education
  • be used by parents/carers as well as teachers
  • address the Agency's commitment to produce a version of the food competences that young people can interact with

The Food route resources have been produced by the Agency, working closely with the British Nutrition Foundation, and have been split into primary school and secondary school resources.

The resources

The primary school resources, aimed at young people up to the age of 12, are made up of a series of four target charts relating to each of the food competences and are supported by teachers' user guides and how to achieve guides. There is also a series of worksheet activities, which is available for download only.

The secondary school resources take the form of a short workbook for each individual competency area, again supported by teacher user guides.

A downloadable certificate is available for each age group, designed to be awarded on completion of the various charts, worksheets or workbooks.

The primary school resources deliver learning around a healthy balanced diet, being safe in the kitchen, carrying out basic cooking skills, such as peeling, slicing and mixing, as well as teaching children about food labelling and where their food comes from.

The secondary school workbooks contain activities for young people looking at the Agency’s 8 tips for eating well, being a healthy weight, preventing cross-contamination, understanding storage instructions on food labels, factors affecting our food choices (including the influence of advertising) and how to make recipes healthier when you cook.
