Stewart is a partner in MPS AGRI Ltd, a family business building and marketing Electronic Sow Feeders for the home and export market.
While Chairman of the British Pig Executive (2003-2015), Stewart was responsible for increasing export markets, particularly China, reducing the risk of PEDv by gaining knowledge from America and Canada and developing an EU Pig Innovation Partnership which includes 11 Member States.
Stewart was Chairman of the National Pig Association and a Director from 2003 until March 2015.
Stewart has held Non-Executive Director roles with the Scottish Agricultural College, The Scottish Rural University College and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board. Stewart was an active member of Copa’s Pigmeat Working Group for 16 years.
He maintains his Directorship with Defra’s Animal Health and Welfare Board (UK government department for agriculture and the environment) with special responsibility for Welfare, AMR, RDPE and the EU Animal Health Law.
In 2007 Stewart was awarded a CBE by Her Majesty the Queen. He has received a number of industry awards including the National Pig Association's Lifetime Fellowship.
