Views are wanted on the draft opinions for two novel food applications by 17 July 2017

The Advisory Committee for Novel Food and Processes (ACNFP) has reviewed two applications from a companies seeking authorisation under the simplified approval novel foods procedure to use their products in the European Union (EU). The ACNFP, which is an independent committee of scientists appointed by the FSA, has completed its assessment and is now asking for comments on their draft opinions.

The first application is for phytosterols which are used by the food industry for their cholesterol-lowering properties. They are naturally present at low levels in vegetable oils and in food derived from such sources. 

The second is for astaxanthin carotenoid which is found in Haematococcus pluvialis a microalgae that is part of the diet of fish or crustaceans (such as salmon and shrimps) and is responsible for the pink coloration of their flesh.

Both companies are seeking authorisation to sell their products on the basis that it is substantial equivalent to ingredients that are authorised to be marketed in the EU. The ACNFP has completed its assessment and is now asking for comments on the draft opinions, which can be found via the links below, before they are finalised by the Committee.

On 23 June 2016, the EU referendum took place and the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. Until exit negotiations are concluded, the UK remains a full member of the European Union and all the rights and obligations of EU membership remain in force. During this period the Government will continue to negotiate, implement and apply EU legislation. It will be for the Government, under the Prime Minister, to begin negotiations to exit the EU. The outcome of these negotiations will determine what arrangements apply in relation to EU legislation and funding in future once the UK has left the EU.

Deadline for comments

Any comments on the draft opinion should be emailed to the ACNFP secretariat at acnfp@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk by Monday 17 July 2017 and will be passed to the Committee before it finalises its assessment of this novel food ingredient.

About novel foods

A novel food is a food or food ingredient that does not have a significant history of consumption within the European Union before 15 May 1997.

Before any new food product can be introduced on the European market it must be rigorously assessed for safety. In the UK, the assessment of novel foods is carried out by the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP), an independent committee of scientists appointed by the FSA.
