Survey of food hygiene standards in UK food establishments

Last updated:
1 October 2005
A survey was conducted by the Food Standards Agency in 2005 to establish a baseline for establishment compliance with food hygiene regulations. In 2007 a follow-up survey was conducted by ADAS UK Ltd on behalf of the FSA to build upon the previous survey.

The full reports of the 2005 and 2007 surveys can be found at the links below.

The survey asked local authorities to use information from their regular food inspections to complete up to 20 questionnaires for different types of food establishments within their area. Only premises inspected between July and November 2007 were eligible for inclusion. A total of 5,051 questionnaires were received from 289 of the 434 local authorities in the UK.

This survey complements the food law enforcement activity data provided by local authorities as part of legally required annual monitoring returns submitted to the Agency.
