New appointment to the FSA Board

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced a new Board Member for Northern Ireland appointed by the Northern Ireland Minister of Health. Anthony Harbinson will serve three years, commencing 1 September 2022 and will also assume the role of Chair of the Northern Ireland Food Advisory Committee (NIFAC).

Anthony Harbinson joins the Board having recently retired from the Northern Ireland Civil Service as Permanent Secretary for the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs. 

A Chartered Certified Accountant by qualification, he served 15 years within The Northern Ireland Health and Personal Social Services, before becoming Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, and then Director of Resources in the Northern Ireland Office.  

In 2010 he joined the newly formed Northern Ireland Department of Justice where he held a number of leadership positions including Director of Access to Justice and Chief Executive of the NI Courts and Tribunal Service.
 

Professor Susan Jebb, Chair of the FSA, said:

I am delighted to welcome Anthony to the FSA Board.  He will bring a breadth of knowledge and experience to the Board and to NIFAC, with deep insights in relation to the devolved structures within which the FSA operates. I look forward to working with him as we continue to protect public health and deliver on our mission of ‘food you can trust’.”

This appointment will involve a time commitment of 35 days per year, and remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £14,000 per year.  This appointment was made on merit and following the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland's Code of Practice.
